The Toronto Blue Jays' unexpected hot streak puts general manager Ross Atkins in an uncomfortable spotlight as the trade deadline approaches, which may result in trading away a fan favourite to make a playoff push.

Blue Jays outfielder Anthony Santander could be on his way out of Toronto come trade deadline.

Atkins forced to make a very tough decision.

Josh Goldberg from Blue Jays Nation writes that the Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins has experienced a significant decline in popularity among fans in recent years. Critics often cite the team's postseason disappointments, challenged in developing homegrown talent, and his tendency to make poorly timed comments as key reasons for their frustration with him.
"For the most part, that criticism has been very fair. The Blue Jays haven't won an AL East title since 2015 and are winless in the postseason since 2016.

Atkins has continually preached internal improvement after failing to land star free agents like Shohei Ohtani and Juan Soto.

The beleaguered general manager entered the 2025 season facing immense pressure to deliver some tangible success, with his contract set to expire after the 2026 campaign." -Goldberg

The 2025 season has served as an intriguing case study and a mixed bag when evaluating Atkins' overall performance. Several of the Blue Jays' major offseason acquisitions have either underperformed, faced injuries, or, in some cases, dealt with both.
Santander's time in Toronto may be short-lived after an extremely underwhelming season with the Blue Jays. I wouldn't be surprised if he's the player Atkins decides to package up in a deal come the trade deadline.
"Anthony Santander has a .179 average, a 60 OPS+, and six home runs in the first season of a five-year, $92.5-million contract." -Goldberg

Ultimately, the future remains uncertain for Atkins. Despite the postseason shortcomings, the Blue Jays have enjoyed one of their most consistent runs as a legitimate playoff contender in franchise history since Mark Shapiro and Atkins took over.
