Toronto Blue Jays trade rumors around Steven Kwan keep pulling the Cleveland Guardians back into the conversation as they look for a Bo Bichette replacement.

Toronto's front office has been comfortable dealing with Cleveland lately, and the paper trail is real. The clubs swapped pieces again on December 17, 2025, when Toronto sent lefty Justin Bruihl for cash considerations.
That was the latest link in a chain that already included bigger names. The Blue Jays landed Shane Bieber at the July 31, 2025 deadline, and earlier grabbed both Andrés Giménez and Myles Straw in separate deals tied to roster building and flexibility.
Kwan was part of the same deadline chatter, even if he never moved. MLB.com and Sportsnet both noted Toronto among the clubs showing heavy interest in the Guardians' left fielder.
Kwan's appeal is simple to explain, he puts the ball in play and he wins innings in the field. Statcast had him in the 99th percentile in strikeout rate and 100th percentile in whiff rate in 2025.
The bat, though, has a wide range depending on the year. In 2025 he finished at .272/.330/.374 with 11 homers over 693 plate appearances, good for a 99 wRC+ on FanGraphs.

Toronto Blue Jays and Steven Kwan could be a great fit

Fans in Toronto tend to love this kind of player, because contact at the top and clean defense in the corners always plays in October.
Kwan also brings speed that shows up without being loud. He stole 21 bases in 2025, and he did it while keeping his on-base game intact for 156 games.
The best version of Kwan is the 2024 hitter who looked like a lineup cheat code. He slashed .292/.368/.425 with 14 homers in 540 plate appearances, and StatMuse tags that season at a 131 wRC+.
Plate discipline was the separator in that peak year, with his walk rate slightly ahead of his strikeout rate. Covering the Corner pegged him at a 9.8% BB% and 9.4% K%, which is rare for a leadoff-type bat.
Defensively, the resume is just as strong. MLB.com credited Kwan with 22 Defensive Runs Saved in 2025, while Toronto's Daulton Varsho led all players with 28 DRS in 2024 per the Fielding Bible awards write-up.
The roster logic matters, too, because the Jays have real outfield questions coming fast. Baseball-Reference lists Varsho as a free agent after 2026, and George Springer's six-year deal runs through 2026, so 2027 is a looming pivot point.
Kwan, drafted by Cleveland in the fifth round in 2018 out of Oregon State, is also not a rental type. FanGraphs lists him under club control into 2027, which is exactly the kind of runway Toronto has been trying to buy.
The catch is cost, because Cleveland has never hidden how much it values Kwan's all-around game. If this rumor heats up again, it likely comes down to whether Toronto can meet that price without tearing out the next wave.
