Toronto Blue Jays fans have been vocal about their worries regarding the teams catchers all off-season and it looks like they are right since only Alejandro Kirk has proven to be a real MLB catcher in camp.
The Blue Jays are having some serious catcher problems a few weeks before the start of the season
Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins stated during the off-season that he was confident in the team's catcher duo of Alejandro Kirk and Tyler Heineman for the 2025 season with Kirk getting majority of the starts.
Unfortunately, as most expected, Heineman has been very average while both Ethan Bethancourt and Ali Sánchez who signed minor league deals have been having a horrendous time at the plate in Spring Training.
As far as on-field underperformance, neither of the catchers brought into camp to compete with Tyler Heineman for the backup job has distinguished himself. Both Christian Bethancourt and Ali Sanchez have gone 1-for-11 -Wilner
This means that Heineman will likely end up with the backup job this season but since Kirk is not used to playing so many games, fans are worried that this might bring on some injuries which would put the team in a very unfortunate spot.
Heineman is a decent catcher but if Kirk goes down with an injury, not many believe that he will be able to take on the responsibilities of a starting catcher for the Blue Jays.
Hopefully after seeing how things have gone in camp, the front office will decide to either make a trade or sign a catcher to help Kirk out a bit more than Heineman can.
