The Toronto Blue Jays have been linked to a ton of players this off-season and the latest is one of their former players in shortstop free agent Paul DeJong.
The Blue Jays are looking at possible shortstops and third baseman this off-season now that they are looking to trade Bo Bichette since he has no plan on re-signing in Toronto when his contract is up.
The Blue Jays are interested in signing free agent and former Blue Jay Paul DeJong
The Blue Jays seem to be willing to seriously switch things up this off-season which is why they are looking to trade Bichette and might have found his replacement in Paul DeJong.
MLB reporter Ryan Finklestein believes that the Blue Jays could be interested in signing their former player in DeJong to a one year contract worth $5 million for the 2025 season.
One key member of their team was Paul DeJong, who was claimed off waivers from the Chicago White Sox in September. He's a free agent now, and Ryan Finkelstein of Just Baseball expects him to sign a one-year, $5 million contract with the Toronto Blue Jays. -Bishop
Bringing in DeJong is risky as he is no longer the player he was when he was voted an all-star in 2019 with the St Louis Cardinals but he could be an interesting rental for one year to give them more time to figure things out.
However DeJong still had a solid season in 2024 split between the Kansas City Royals and Chicago White Sox as he finished with 24 homeruns, 56 RBIs, a .227 batting average and .276 on base percentage.
DeJong slashed .227 /.276/.427 with 24 home runs and 56 RBI last year. He brings power from the right side and can play all four infield positions. The Royals might regret letting him walk if he does leave. -Bishop
The other interesting factor about DeJong is that he can also play third base which would allow the Blue Jays to move Ernie Clement over the shortstop if they decide to.
While fans would likely rather add a player like Alex Bregman, DeJong might be a solid backup option.
