The Chicago Cubs are actively shopping Nico Hoerner, and if Ross Atkins is serious about maximizing this window, he needs to be on the phone with Jed Hoyer right now.
The news that Chicago is looking to clear their infield logjam after signing Alex Bregman is a golden ticket for Toronto.
Hoerner (Drafted 1st Round, 2018 by Cubs) is the exact type of player this lineup has been crying out for.
He is a contact-first machine who just hit .297 with 29 doubles and 61 RBI in 2025.
We are talking about a two-time Gold Glover who can play elite defense at second base or shortstop.
With one year left on his deal at a very reasonable $12 million, he is the perfect low-risk, high-reward rental to push this team over the top.
Imagine him setting the table ahead of Vladdy, or slotting into the #2 hole to move runners and create chaos on the basepaths (29 steals last year).
He brings a "winning player" DNA that fits perfectly with the culture we are trying to build.
The price is right for a perfect fit
So, what does a deal look like?
Looking at the market, the Cubs need bullpen help or outfield depth looking toward 2027.
Trade Proposal: Blue Jays send Jonatan Clase and a mid-tier arm like CJ Van Eyk for Nico Hoerner.
Clase is a polished hitter who fits the Cubs' need for a future outfielder, especially with Ian Happ hitting free agency soon.
It hurts to trade a guy like Clase who has done not done much in the MLB yet but clearly has a lot of potential.
For Toronto, this solves the second base question instantly and adds a dynamic element to the offense that we lacked last season.
Hoerner’s median surplus value is sitting right around $18M, making a Clase-led package a fair swap for both sides.
We have the depth to make this move without gutting the farm.
Adding a guy who hits .300, plays elite defense, and runs the bases like a demon? That is a no-brainer.
Make the call, Ross.
