The Toronto Blue Jays were active on Monday, signing right-handed pitchers Spencer Turnbull and José Ureņa to one-year deals.

The Blue Jays announce multiple moves on Monday.

Lucas Casaletto from City News writes that to make room on the roster, the Blue Jays moved starter Max Scherzer and reliever Erik Swanson to the 60-day injured list. Spencer Turnbull will join the Florida Complex League Blue Jays to begin building up his workload in the coming weeks.
ROSTER MOVES:
🔹 Signed RHP Spencer Turnbull to 1-year MLB contract & optioned to FCL Blue Jays
🔹 Signed RHP José Ureņa to 1-year MLB contract
🔹 RHP Max Scherzer transferred to 60-day IL
🔹 RHP Erik Swanson transferred to 60-day IL
🔹 LHP Josh Walker optioned to Triple-A
Turnbull, 32, last pitched for the Philadelphia Phillies in 2024, posting a 2.65 ERA and 58 strikeouts over 54 1/3 innings across 17 appearances (seven starts). He was especially sharp in the rotation, delivering a 1.78 ERA and 38 strikeouts as a starter.
"Turnbull missed the 2022 season after recovering from Tommy John surgery. Before that, the right-hander was a reliable arm for the Detroit Tigers, combining for a 3.46 ERA across 20 starts split between 2020 and 2021." -Casaletto

Casaletto also writes that Ureņa, 33, has been something of a journeyman throughout his career, most recently making a single appearance for the New York Mets this season. In 2024, he pitched in 33 games (including nine starts) for the Texas Rangers, recording a 3.80 ERA with 70 strikeouts over 109 innings.
As for the Blue Jays' injuries...
"On the injury front, Swanson will be eligible to come off the IL on May 26, while Scherzer could return on May 29. Additionally, lefty reliever Josh Walker has been optioned to Triple-A Buffalo." -Casaletto

Toronto is scrambling to fill the No. 5 spot in its starting rotation while Max Scherzer continues his recovery. So far, the team has tried a mix of approaches: four starts from Easton Lucas, skipping the rotation spot altogether at times, and most recently, using a bullpen day with Yariel Rodriguez as the opener.
A starter has not yet been named for Tuesday's game in Los Angeles against the Angels.
