Toronto Blue Jays closing in on star Miami Marlins pitcher in a massive trade deadline deal

The Toronto Blue Jays are reportedly targeting standout Miami Marlins pitcher Edward Cabrera in what could be a blockbuster trade deadline move to help bolster their bullpen.
The Blue Jays are projected to be among the most aggressive buyers at this year's MLB trade deadline.

Graeme Wallace from Blue Jays Nation writes that measuring at 6-foot-5 and weighing 217 pounds, Cabrera cuts an imposing figure every time he takes the mound.
"He was signed back in 2015 as a 17-year-old international free from the Dominican Republic. The now 27-year-old took his lumps as a young prospect before breaking through in 2021, moving through three levels of the minor leagues before making his debut in August of that year. Through parts of five seasons, Cabrera owns a 21-26 record, with a 4.12 ERA and 420 strikeouts over 382 career innings (9.9 K/9 IP) and a 6.3 bWAR. This season, he's 4-4, with a 3.48 ERA and 92 K's over 88 frames while amassing a 3.55 FIP and a 1.239 WHIP." -Wallace
If the Blue Jays see ace-level potential in Cabrera, he could emerge as the most logical target among a deep pool of trade candidates. He'd bring much-needed youth to a veteran-laden rotation, an appealing long-term asset.
That upside, however, will raise the Marlins' asking price, but it may be a necessary cost for Toronto to secure some contract control on the mound.
"If he is acquired, Cabrera would be a move for this season and beyond, and with Chris Bassitt set to hit free agency and Kevin Gausman's contract up after next season (as well as a potential Jose Berrios opt-out following the 2026 campaign), the plan for the future of the rotation would be set in motion." -Wallace
