Toronto Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins had made some errors over the years when it comes to signing players and it looks like he has made another this time with Bo Bichette.
Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins has clearly made a costly mistake when it comes to Bo Bichette's contract
Last off-season, when all the contract drama was going on with Vladimir Guerrero Jr, many thought that Atkins made a huge mistake in not signing him earlier this they had to pay a lot more money to keep him in Toronto.
Now the same situation is happening with Bichette as Jays Journal reporter Matthew Sookram pointed out, if the Blue Jays would have signed Bichette at the start of the season, they would have gotten him at an incredible low price due to his poor 2024 season.
The Blue Jays may have shot themselves in the foot by not signing Bo to a long term deal when they signed Vladdy Guerrero Jr. earlier this year. At the time, Bichette was coming off his worst season when his 2024 campaign was marred by injuries and he produced a meager -0.3 bWAR while struggling through the majority of the 81 games he appeared in. -Sookram
Now, the Blue Jays have yet to begin negotiations with Bichette who's game continues to improve throughout the season along with him value on a new contract.
Bo Bichette is heating up
Over the last 30 days, he's been one of the best hitters in baseball:
▪️ 1st in Hits (42) ▪️ 2nd in Batting Avg. (.404) ▪️ 5th in RBIs (24)
At this pace, he's headed for a big year... and a serious payday
This is a very unfortunate situation caused by Atkins as it looks like he has not learned from his mistakes since this is exactly what happened with Guerrero prior to signing him to a $500 million deal.
The Blue Jays will now have to pay way more money if they plan on keeping Bichette for next season.
