The Toronto Blue Jays have some big plans for the 2025 off-season and it looks they are expected to make a big move for Detroit Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal.

The Blue Jays have quite a few holes in their lineup going into the 2026 season but many see that as an opportunity to land some big time players.

Blue Jays could make a play for Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal

The Tigers and Skubal seem to be very far away on a contract extension which is why several MLB insiders including Lauren Shehadi believe that Detroit will look to trade him this off-season.
«I hate this because my favorite pitcher is Tarik Skubal, but he's gone, he's going to the Mets,» she said in a clip from November 5th. «Can I tell you why? Last we heard, he wants $400 million. And we heard that the (Detroit) Tigers came in under Crocchetit's too far, you're too far. They're just going to let him walk? Wouldn't they (want to) get something for him? It just makes sense.» -Shehadi

Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins held a press conference a few days ago and stated that the front office feels good about the free agent market, that it is a bit better that the last few years and that they have already been working on some stuff.
«We have been working on that for some time, and we'll continue to do it,» Atkins said to the media on November 6, 2025. «We do feel good about the free-agent market in the starting pitching area, relative to most years. It's a little bit better, seemingly. We'll get to work on the trade front, as well, (and) have started that somewhat.» -Atkins

The Blue Jays only have Trey Yesavage, Kevin Gausman and Shane Bieber locked in for next season which means they need to bring in at least two pitchers.
With Kevin Gausman, Trey Yesavage, and Shane Bieber the only locks for the starting rotation, it makes sense for the Blue Jays GM to do the best he can to secure the best pitchers available to make another run for the World Series.Kerney

Skubal could be a huge boost for the Blue Jays chances of returning to the World Series but if they do end up trading for him, they will need to be prepared to sign him to a contract extension worth around $400 million which is what he is looking for.
