Alex Bregman to the Chicago Cubs stings the Toronto Blue Jays, who chased his bat hard all winter.
A report making the rounds Saturday says Alex Bregman and the Chicago Cubs have a five-year, $175 million agreement. MLB.com's rumor tracker still had him unsigned Friday.
If the deal is real, it's a monster pay day for a third baseman who keeps the line moving. MLB.com shows Bregman hit .273 with an .822 OPS, 18 homers, and 62 RBIs in 2025, while Reuters reported the same line over 114 games.
Alex Bregman signs with the Chicago Cubs need
As a Blue Jays watcher, I'm used to rumors ending with somebody else's press release. Bregman's patient at-bats and pulled liners would fit the Chicago Cubs lineup right away.
The Toronto Blue Jays interest wasn't imaginary, MLB Trade Rumors and Sportsnet both tied Toronto to Scott Boras talks in late December. MLB.com later suggested the Jays' focus could be shifting after adding Kazuma Okamoto.
Third baseman Alex Bregman and the Chicago Cubs are in agreement on a five-year, $175 million contract, sources tell ESPN. One year after their failed pursuit of Bregman in free agency, the Cubs land one of the biggest bats of the winter.
That's why this Cubs splash, if it's real, lands like a gut punch north of the border. As of Friday, MLB.com still framed Bregman's market as ongoing, so I'm waiting for the formal transaction page.
A five-year, $175 million deal works out to $35 million per season. Chicago's infield defense tightens if Bregman stays at third, and his 18 homers in 2025 show real thump.
Toronto wanted a right-handed anchor who grinds counts, letting Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and the lefties breathe. Bregman would have solved third base cleanly and kept Ernie Clement in a more natural second-base lane.
MLB.com lists him at a .272 career average with 209 homers and 725 RBIs, and Reuters matches those totals. He's hit 19 postseason homers, the kind of October résumé the Blue Jays keep chasing.
Now Toronto has to decide if the next big swing is Kyle Tucker, Bo Bichette, or a quieter depth move. If Bregman truly is headed to Chicago, that decision gets louder fast.
Winter isn't over, but missing on elite bats hurts more than any bad series. Whether this Passan report sticks or fades, the Blue Jays need their next headline to actually land.
