The Toronto Blue Jays acquired pitcher Louis Varland at the trade deadline from the Minnesota Twins but a recent report showed how he was mistreated.
The Blue Jays traded rookie Alan Roden and prospect Kendry Rojas in the final minutes of the trade deadline to the Twins in exchange for Ty France and Louis Varland.
Twins mistreatment of Blue Jays pitcher Louis Varland exposed
The Twins decide to clear house at the trade deadline this year but many were surprised that they traded Varland due to the incredible season he is having plus the fact that he is only 27 years old.
According to reports, Varland did not expect to be traded at all since he is a Minnesota native, loved playing for the Twins and still had two more years before being eligible for arbitration.
Varland was devastated, leaving Twins players seething and rivals GMs dumfounded as to why the Twins would actually trade a valuable reliever (2.02 ERA, 47 strikeouts in 49 innings) with five years of control. My God, he was born and raised in St. Paul, with his wife and a family coming to virtually every home game. This is the way you treat him?
During his first pre game interview with the Blue Jays, Varland made it clear that he was shocked by the news of the trade since he thought he would be staying in Minnesota for the foreseeable future.
While the MLB has always been a business and will continue to be a move like this does not make much sense especially when looking at the Twins return which makes many wonder if the Twins did this with a purpose.
Regardless of all of this, the Blue Jays are quite happy to add a solid reliever like Varland to their bullpen with an incredible 2.12 ERA especially since he is locked in for the next few years.
