The Washington Nationals announced that they have decided to invite former Toronto Blue Jays infielder Orelvis Martinez to Spring Training.

The Nationals signed Martinez to a minor league deal at the end of September after he was released by the Blue Jays in mid September.

Nationals give non-roster invite to Orelvis Martinez

Martinez has had a rough couple of years following his MLB debut with the Blue Jays in 2024. After only 3 games in the majors, the MLB suspended Martinez for 80 games which is when all of his troubles began.

After struggling in the minors and not getting called up by the Blue Jays this past season, Toronto decided to cut ties with Martinez and release him.

Now, Martinez is looking for a fresh start in Washington, the team announced that Martinez along with Tyler Baum and Eddy Yean have all received non-roster invites to Spring Training.

The Nationals have extended non-roster invites to 2026 Major League Spring Training to the following players:

-INF Orelvis Martinez
-RHP Tyler Baum
-RHP Eddy Yean

Martinez was one of the Blue Jays most promising prospects and many expected him to turn into a big time MLB slugger which is why the Nationals are willing to take a chance on him.

If he can find a way to turn his game around and improve over the off-season, there is a good chance that Martinez could end up making the Nationals roster.

While Martinez has a steep hill to climb to get back to where he was, he is still young enough that he can make something out of his career.
