The Pittsburgh Pirates have made headlines once again after cheating Rowdy Tellez out of a incentive bonus have now done the same to former Blue Jays Isiah Kiner-Falefa.
The Pirates have not been looking good lately as they cheated Tellez out of a yearly incentive by DFA'ing last week when he had just four plate appearances left to reach a $200,000 bonus on the season.
The Pittsburgh Pirates, whom Tellez had played for for the entirety of the 2024 season, did him wrong and they know it. The 29-year-old needed just four more plate appearances to reach a $200K bonus that was worked into the one-year deal he signed with the Pirates this past offseason. Instead of giving him the chance to get there with a handful of games left, Pittsburgh chose to designate him for assignment and later release him. -Treuden
It looks like they have not learned from their mistakes as they have now done the same to former Blue Jays Isiah Kiner-Falefa who was four plate appearances away from a $250,000 bonus going into the last game as he was not put into the lineup.
In a not-so-fun development, the Pirates are doing it again, this time with a more recent former Blue Jay. According to Pirates stat guru Ethan Hullihen, Isiah Kiner-Falefa is just four plate appearances away from getting a $250K performance bonus of his own. -Treuden
This is now the second time in the span of a week the Pirates have pulled the same move which is unfortunately dragging their name through the mud as they enter free agency.
Players will likely be much less tempted to sign in Pittsburgh this off-season as it looks like ownership is more concerned with saying a bit of money than respecting their players.
