Jose Berrios and John Schneider are back in uncertain territory, and the Blue Jays suddenly have another real rotation problem on their hands.

Schneider said Friday that Berrios' MRI showed inflammation in his right elbow along with «small changes» to the original injury, and the right-hander is set to see another doctor this week.

That matters because Berrios was already out with a stress fracture in that same elbow, an injury that put him on the injured list before the season even started.

Now the story has shifted from simple rehab delay to a more serious medical checkpoint. Toronto has not said Berrios is done for the season, but this is no longer just a routine wait-and-see update.

The specialist visit is the part that raises the stakes. Teams do not send a starter for another medical opinion unless there is something they need clarified, especially with an elbow issue that already involved a fracture.

And if this turns into a shutdown, the Blue Jays would be staring at another brutal hit to a staff that has already taken too many. That is not confirmed yet, but it is clearly on the table enough to make this a major concern.

Toronto's rotation depth is getting tested again

Cody Ponce is already out for the season after an ACL tear, so losing Berrios long term would leave Toronto with 2 starters wiped out for the year.

The Blue Jays are also still waiting on Max Scherzer and Shane Bieber, both of whom remain sidelined as the club tries to patch together innings. Bieber is only now moving back toward facing hitters, while Scherzer has not returned to the active staff.

That is why Berrios' setback lands so hard. He was supposed to be one of the stabilizers in this rotation, not another arm forcing Toronto deeper into its contingency plans.

Instead, Schneider is left trying to hold things together with a thinner margin than any club wants in mid-May. Toronto has already leaned on bulk outings, patched roles, and depth arms just to cover series.

There is still a narrow lane for good news here. Until the specialist gives a final read, the Blue Jays cannot say whether this is a season-ending turn or just another delay in a frustrating recovery.

But the mood around this one has changed. Jose Berrios is not just rehabbing anymore. He is dealing with a fresh elbow concern, and the Blue Jays have every reason to fear what comes next.
