If the Detroit Tigers are aiming to pull off a blockbuster deal at the trade deadline, they'll need several teams around the league to shift into sell mode.
One team that could directly influence Detroit's plans is the Toronto Blue Jays.
Tigers poised to trade for Blue Jays' All-Star.
Jon Conahan from The Sporting News writes that the Blue Jays have been performing well lately, putting them in a position where they could decide to stand pat.
However, with star shortstop Bo Bichette set to hit free agency after the season, it wouldn't be shocking if Toronto chose to part ways with him, even if they remain buyers at the deadline.
"Remember now, teams around the league have bought and sold at the same time in recent years, and the Blue Jays are potentially one of them that could do it this year. Bichette is very good, so losing him for nothing would be a disservice to the entire organization." -Conahan
In exploring possible trade scenarios, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic recently connected the Tigers and Blue Jays as potential partners. However, he also noted that Toronto's current position in the standings makes it uncertain whether they'll fully commit to selling.
«Third base and shortstop are currently the Tigers' most in-flux positions, which leads to natural speculation about them making a run at Toronto's Bo Bichette. However, it is worth noting that the Toronto Blue Jays would make the playoffs if the season were to end today. They might not be clear sellers." -Stavenhagen
If the Tigers manage to acquire Bichette, they could approach the move as either a short-term rental or a potential long-term solution for their infield.
"Whether he plays shortstop or moves over to third base, there's reason to believe that Bichette would be welcomed in the middle of this lineup. After leading the American League in hits in 2021 and 2022, he's slowed down a bit, but still has a 107 OPS+. Bichette would be a nice addition to the Tigers' lineup." -Conahan
While Bichette would initially be a rental, ESPN's Jeff Passan suggests he could command around $100 million in free agency, a price tag the Tigers could afford if they decide to invest long-term.
