The MLB trade deadline is a little over a month away which is why rumors are flying around including the Toronto Blue Jays looking at two Arizona Diamondback pitchers.
Blue Jays could be looking to trade for one of two Arizona Diamondback pitchers
The Blue Jays are apparently all in on trying to find a starting pitcher at the deadline and with the Diamondbacks likely to be sellers by the end of July, this could end up benefitting the Blue Jays.
The Diamondbacks have two pitchers in Zach Gallen and Merrill Kelly who could be great rentals for the Blue Jays as they are both on expiring deals but could be re-signed if the play well.
According to Jim Bowden of The Athletic, this should help line up a deadline deal between the Diamondbacks and the Blue Jays. Bowden says, «The Blue Jays have made acquiring a starting pitcher their priority at this trade deadline. They match up well with the Diamondbacks for one of their impending free-agent starters, (Zach) Gallen or (Merrill) Kelly, if Arizona decides to sell.» -Bowden
Kelly has been having a much better season than Gallen in 2025 as he has a 3.18 ERA compared to Gallen's 5.15 but at the same time he has had an ERA below 4.00 the last three season which shows he has been able to stay consistent apart from this year.
Gallen is not having his best season, with a career high 5.15 ERA and leading the league with 35 walks in 80.1 IP. But at 29 years old and 33.2 playoff innings under his belt, he should still have plenty left in the tank to bounce back and put up good numbers for the rest of the campaign. -Sokkram
Either player would be great for Toronto who clearly need to replace Bowden Francis who cannot seem to figure it out on the mound this season.
Hopefully Toronto is able to find a solid pitcher before the playoffs.
