Ernie Clement is back in the lineup this afternoon, and that gives the Blue Jays one less thing to worry about in Minnesota.

That matters because Clement’s day off Friday drew immediate attention. He had started Toronto’s first 31 games of the season before sitting out, which is why fans jumped so quickly from lineup rest to injury fear.
Now the follow-up is much cleaner. Clement’s return for Saturday’s game against the Twins gives Schneider one of his steadiest infield bats back for an afternoon matchup Toronto badly needs.
The Blue Jays head into the game at 15-17 with Dylan Cease on the mound against Minnesota left-hander Connor Prielipp. That pitching setup alone made Clement’s return more important, because Toronto needs its regulars behind Cease in a game that can help settle the series.
Clement has earned that kind of attention. He entered the weekend hitting .302 across 31 games, and he has been one of the few Blue Jays hitters to bring consistent contact through the season’s first month.
That is why his absence Friday felt louder than a normal maintenance day. Toronto’s lineup has not had much margin for subtraction, so even one missing regular changes the shape of the card in a hurry.

Clement’s return gives Toronto its familiar infield look again

This is not just about one bat coming back. Clement has become one of Schneider’s most trusted everyday pieces because he gives the Blue Jays defensive flexibility and low-maintenance at-bats that help keep innings moving.
Friday’s lineup change was easy to explain once the club made clear it was simply his first day off of the year. Saturday’s lineup reveal matters because it confirms there was no lingering issue forcing him out for longer.
That is a needed break for Toronto on its own. The Blue Jays have already dealt with enough rotation and roster churn that even minor lineup uncertainty starts to feel heavier than it should.
And with Cease starting, the script is obvious. Toronto wants cleaner defence, better support, and a lineup that looks more like itself after Friday’s temporary shuffle. Clement helps all 3.
There is still pressure on the rest of the order, of course. One player coming back does not fix an offense on his own, especially against a Twins club trying to build off Thursday’s opener.
But for the Blue Jays, this afternoon’s lineup card still sent a simple message. Ernie Clement is back, the regular infield look returns with him, and that is exactly the kind of small win this club needed.
