The Toronto Blue Jays are looking for their next big signing after the Dylan Cease deal and reports suggest that they are trying to close another all-star pitcher.
The Blue Jays made their largest free agent signing this past when when they agreed to terms with Cease on a 7 year contract worth $210 million.
Blue Jays looking to close a deal with all-star closer Edwin Diaz
Ross Atkins spoke of possibly moving Jeff Hoffman out of the closer role earlier this off-season which has resulted in a lot of rumors regarding the Blue Jays going after a new closer.
In a recent report, Zachary Rotman of Fansided stated that the Blue Jays have been in on Edwin Diaz all off-season and there is a real possibility for a deal to take place.
«Admittedly, meeting Diaz's lavish demands might be too much to ask for, considering how volatile relievers can be, the fact that they'd have to part with additional compensation after Diaz rejected the qualifying offer, and the fact that he'll be 32 years old by Opening Day, but if the Jays are hellbent on improving their bullpen, there isn't a better option out there than Diaz. They've even been connected to Diaz this offseason,» -Rotman
Diaz is projected to sign a 5 year deal worth $102 million which means if no money is deferred he would be making an annual salary of $20.4 million per season which is a lot of money for a closer.
While this may seem like a lot of money, the Blue Jays would be adding arguably the best closer in baseball to their bullpen which they have made clear they want to improve before next season.
During the 2025 season, Diaz finished with an outstanding 1.63 ERA in 66.1 innings pitched to go along with 28 saves, 98 strike outs and a 6-3 record.
It can be argued that the Blue Jays would be better off spending the money elsewhere, on a player that brings in more offense but at the same time, it was clear in the playoffs that an improvement in the bullpen is necessary.
