The Toronto Blue Jays are by far the hottest team in the MLB right now, after being runner ups in the World Series, they have now signed Dylan Cease to a long term deal, and they aren't done, reports are saying they are going after either Robert Suarez or Edwin Diaz.
The Blue Jays lacked a solid closer last season, and there are none better than Diaz.
Blue Jays still ready to spend more on top free agents.
Caleb Kerney of the Heavy reported on the activity of the Blue Jays this offseason.
Making it all the way to game 7 of the World Series has definitely helped them out financially, and they are starting to flex their muscles a little more to the rest of the league. Their number priority this offseason is pitching, they got a starter, now they need a closer.
"Diaz spent the 2025 season with the New York Mets. As the closer, he recorded 28 saves in 31 opportunities. Only four home runs were scored off his pitches, with batters scoring 14 total runs in his 62 innings. He also recorded 98 strikeouts to go along with a 0.87 WHIP and a 1.63 ERA."-Kerney
If the Blue Jays want to go a little less expensive with their closer they can turn to Suarez. Who is a little bit older and less experienced than Diaz, but the Blue Jays still have Bo Bichette and maybe even Kyle Tucker to sign, they need to compromise somewhere and it might with their closing pitcher.
"In his four years, Suarez began as a setup man who transitioned into a closer. Last year, he earned 40 saves (first in the MLB) and threw 75 strikeouts in 69 2/3 innings. Additionally, he finished the season with a 0.90 WHIP, a 2.97 ERA, and allowed six home runs."-Kerney
Suarez is still a really good option, better than Jeff Hoffman who seem to be alright with not being the closer for the Blue Jays anymore and he would cost a lot less money. Regardless of who they go with, the Blue Jays have a different air about them. They can go after top free agents, a feeling they did not have for a long time.
Another good season next year will only cement that.
