If Bo Bichette hits free agency, he could be the best bat on the market for the Blue Jays.
He capped off a terrific 2025 season with a three-run homer off Shohei Ohtani in Game 7 of the World Series, one of the signature moments of that whole run.
That performance led directly to his three-year, $42 million annual deal with the Mets, a contract that includes opt-outs after each season.
Jeff Passan has already described his decision on whether to exercise that opt-out as a genuine coin flip, driven in part by a rougher start to his first season in New York.
Bichette posted just an 88 wRC+ in the first half this year, a real step back. But he's turned things around significantly since, with a particularly strong June and August sandwiched around a quieter September.
Why the reunion case is more complicated than it looks
Toronto's own offense badly needed exactly this kind of impact bat all season, and Bichette's track record at the plate remains real even through an uneven year.
The Blue Jays haven't adequately replaced his production in the lineup since he left, a gap that showed up repeatedly during this year's disappointing offensive stretch.
There's also a personal wrinkle worth considering. Bichette admitted recently that he hasn't stayed in close touch with his former Toronto teammates, describing real affection for the organization but limited day-to-day contact since leaving.
That distance doesn't rule out a reunion, but it suggests his departure wasn't an emotionally difficult one to move past, which could cut either way in free agency.
Financially, matching or exceeding his current Mets deal would require real payroll commitment from Toronto, especially with other offseason needs like a right fielder and pitching depth also competing for resources.
Whether Bichette even opts out remains genuinely uncertain, and Toronto would be competing with the Mets and likely other suitors if he does hit the market.
Still, few players available this winter would address Toronto's offensive needs as directly as Bichette would, making this a reunion worth seriously exploring if the opportunity actually presents itself.
