Denis Samudio has quietly turned into one of the Blue Jays' better pitching stories this year.

Toronto acquired the right-hander from the Royals on June 15 for pitcher Connor Seabold, along with cash considerations.

That's not a trade anyone made headlines over at the time. It's looking better with each passing month.

The Panama native signed with Kansas City in January 2025, making his debut in the Dominican Summer League and posting a 1.72 ERA over 11 outings to close that season.

He opened 2026 in Rookie League, then moved quickly to Single-A after a strong 3.18 ERA over just two rookie-level games.

At the time of the trade, Samudio was with Single-A Columbia, going 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA and 17 strikeouts across 14 innings.

Since joining Toronto's system, he's stayed at Single-A Dunedin for the rest of the season.

Why his workload growth stands out most

Through 13 games, nine of them starts, Samudio went 4-2 with a 3.70 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP for Dunedin.

He struck out 74 batters over 56 innings, an eye-catching rate for a 21-year-old still building up as a starter.

Working at least five innings in six of his nine starts shows real development in stamina, exactly the kind of growth that matters for a young arm being groomed to start.

His final outing of the season was his best. He worked 5.1 innings against the Tampa Tarpons, allowing three hits and no runs while striking out seven, needing just 78 pitches to get there.

Toronto's system has produced several arms generating real buzz this season, from Trey Yesavage's rapid ascent last year to Nolan Perry and Johnny King impressing at higher levels.

Samudio's story hasn't drawn the same attention, but the underlying performance justifies real optimism.

He's likely ticketed for High-A Vancouver next season, a genuine test against tougher competition that will tell Toronto more about his real ceiling.

For a front office that gave up a journeyman reliever in Seabold, landing a 21-year-old with this kind of strikeout rate and developing workload is exactly the type of quiet win that adds up over a full farm system.
