Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is following Paul Goldschmidt's blueprint to fix a down year. The Blue Jays slugger will spend the winter rebuilding his swing with family.
His father, Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero Sr., and his uncle, former big-leaguer Wilton Guerrero, will both work with him this offseason, per Dominican reporter Mike Rodriguez.
Guerrero Jr. has long credited Wilton with teaching him the fundamentals. Now the whole family is back at the drawing board.
The numbers explain why. He hit .260 with a .356 slugging percentage over 144 games in 2026.
His nine homers and 57 RBIs were his fewest in a full season. His 95 wRC+ was a career low.
Why Goldschmidt? Because the parallel is almost eerie.
Paul Goldschmidt's 2019 slump offers Vladdy a road map
Goldschmidt signed a five-year, $130 million extension with the Cardinals in March 2019. Then he hit .260 that season, the exact average Guerrero posted this year.
His OPS fell from .922 to .821. The Athletic's Mitch Bannon pointed to what came next as the lesson for Toronto.
Goldschmidt spent the following winter and part of 2020 working with Jeff Albert on the lower-half load in his swing.
Several Blue Jays coaches flagged Guerrero's load and the tempo of his attack during the season. That's the same area of the swing.
His father's resume helps. Guerrero Sr. hit .318 with 449 homers over 16 seasons and never struck out more than 95 times in a year.
Joey Votto already pointed him in that direction, calling his dad “textbook for what kind of hitter you should be.”
This is the right plan. Eye surgery was a start, but fixing the load with a Hall of Famer who knows his swing better than anyone is the kind of work that changes seasons.
It's like a carpenter going back to the shop where he first learned the trade. The tools are familiar, and so is the voice telling him what he's doing wrong.
A likely lockout on Dec. 1 won't stop it, either. Family work in the Dominican doesn't need a CBA.
For now, he's spending time at his farm in Don Gregorio, recently sporting pink hair. The real test comes in 2027, year two of a contract that runs through 2039.
