Freddy Peralta is dominating October, and SI's Zion Trammel believes the Blue Jays should chase him in free agency. The ALCS MVP would give Toronto a frontline arm.
The right-hander has been terrific for the Rays this postseason. He's allowed two earned runs with 12 strikeouts over 16.2 innings.
“If Peralta continues to excel in the World Series, he will command a competitive market,” Trammel wrote.
Toronto's need is obvious. SI's Maddy Dickens noted that, if Cody Ponce is healthy, the Jays would be running a four-man rotation of Dylan Cease, Trey Yesavage, José Soriano and Ponce.
José Berrios is still working back from Tommy John surgery. Shane Bieber and Max Scherzer are free agents.
MLB.com's Keegan Matheson framed the challenge as finding “that line now between bad luck and controllable variables.” Health is now priority one.
Freddy Peralta's World Series run could raise his price
That's the risk of waiting. Every strong World Series outing pushes his market higher.
Is he worth top dollar? For a rotation this thin, a proven October performer makes a lot of sense.
Toronto should be aggressive here. Pair Peralta with Cease, and the Jays suddenly have one of the more formidable one-two punches in the American League.
There are cheaper paths, too. Alberta's Michael Soroka posted a better K/9 than Peralta in 2026 and will cost far less.
Sonny Gray and Bieber are also on the market. Ross Atkins doesn't have to land Peralta, but he does need at least two starters.
Buying a free agent after a World Series run is like buying a stock right after it hits a record high. It might keep climbing, but you're paying full price.
Durability cuts both ways. Matheson noted Berrios hadn't missed a start in nearly a decade before his elbow gave out, a reminder that no arm is guaranteed.
Peralta has a few more World Series starts to drive up his price. If Toronto wants him, the smartest move is being ready the day free agency opens.
