Nate Garkow is headed to Triple-A Buffalo, and John Schneider's club just moved one of its more interesting relief arms a step from the majors.
That is the real story here. This is not only a nice reward for a strong stretch in New Hampshire. It is a bullpen promotion that puts Garkow much closer to becoming a real in-season option for Toronto.
Garkow opened 2026 with the Fisher Cats and posted a 3.63 ERA in 15 appearances, with 19 strikeouts over 17.1 innings. For a reliever, that kind of strikeout pace is always going to get attention inside the organization.
The Blue Jays had already tipped their hand on how they viewed him. Toronto invited the right-hander to big-league camp this spring, which told you he was already on the radar before this latest move.
That spring invite mattered because Garkow is not some draft-and-develop arm who has been protected for years. He signed with Toronto out of independent ball in July 2024 and has climbed quickly since then.
The appeal is easy to spot. Sportsnet recently highlighted Garkow's «Bugs Bunny» changeup, the pitch that has helped turn him from an indy-ball find into a reliever the Blue Jays keep pushing upward.

Buffalo is where relief depth starts getting serious. Once a pitcher gets there, the conversation shifts from prospect curiosity to whether he can help the major-league bullpen in the same season.
Garkow's 2025 season laid the groundwork for this jump. Between High-A Vancouver and Double-A New Hampshire, he struck out 86 batters in 53.2 innings with a 3.19 ERA, which is the kind of swing-and-miss line that forces a front office to keep moving you.
That is why the changeup matters so much. A reliever can survive on one carrying pitch if it is nasty enough, and everything around Garkow right now suggests Toronto believes that offering can play against better hitters. That is an inference from the promotion, his spring invite, and the reporting on the pitch.
There is also age pressure here in a good way. At 28, Garkow is not being developed on a slow clock. If Buffalo goes well, this can turn into a major-league conversation fast.
That is what makes this more than a minor-league note. The Blue Jays are not just bumping up a hot arm. They are putting a late-blooming reliever with one elite weapon in position to force his way into the bigger picture.
Toronto has spent plenty of this season looking for bullpen answers wherever it can find them. Nate Garkow just made himself one of the more interesting names in that search, and Triple-A Buffalo is now the last real test before the Blue Jays have to think even bigger.
