Spencer Arrighetti just delivered his best outing yet in a Blue Jays uniform.

He went 2.2 innings with one unearned run allowed in Toronto's 7-3 win over the Orioles Saturday, a genuine step forward after a rough stretch since arriving.

That win kept the Blue Jays right behind Cleveland for the final AL wild-card spot.

Arrighetti burst onto the scene with Houston back in 2024, allowing just six earned runs over his final four outings that year to help the Astros reach the playoffs.

He was scheduled to start Game 3 of that wild-card round against Detroit, but the Tigers swept the series before that start ever happened.

That missed chance is fueling him now.

"Having been there once, it makes me more excited, more hungry to get back there," Arrighetti told The Athletic's Mitch Bannon. "Everything I'm doing right now is trying to help this team be in that same spot."

Why his role matters more with the rotation banged up

Toronto acquired him at this year's trade deadline for outfielder Daulton Varsho, and he's filled in wherever the club has needed him since.

That flexibility matters given the state of Toronto's rotation right now. Trey Yesavage, Shane Bieber, and Jameson Taillon are all currently on the IL.

More performances like Saturday's from Arrighetti would go a long way toward covering that gap.

"I'm whatever they want me to be," Arrighetti said. "All that matters right now is winning, especially with where we're at in the standings. I have absolutely no ego about this."

Toronto sits one game back of the final wild-card spot with 13 games left, including crucial series against the Orioles and Rangers still to come.

With the rotation questions still unresolved, Arrighetti's willingness to fill whatever role is needed, starter, bulk reliever, or opener, could matter as much as his actual numbers.

"Being involved in winning is way cooler than being involved in losing," Arrighetti said.
