Jacob deGrom is back in the Mets conversation as Andy Green's club faces another offseason built around repairing its rotation.

New York is tracking toward a second straight season without October baseball, putting more pressure on the organization to find dependable innings behind its young starters.

Nolan McLean, Zac Thornton and Jonah Tong are all under 25. That gives the Mets upside, but relying heavily on that group again would leave plenty of uncertainty on the mound.

Tarik Skubal would represent the biggest possible swing. The cost of landing him could push New York toward a shorter commitment through the trade market instead.

That is where deGrom becomes interesting. Jake Elman of FanSided identified the former Mets ace as a possible reunion candidate if Texas is willing to discuss a deal.

DeGrom still carries enormous history in Queens. His 43.9 bWAR with the Mets ranks fourth in franchise history behind Tom Seaver, David Wright and Dwight Gooden.

The bigger question is what version of deGrom New York would be buying. At 38, the right-hander has still produced a 10-9 record with a 3.80 ERA this season.

He also has 186 strikeouts across 28 appearances. That type of workload would immediately stand out in a Mets rotation that has struggled to find stability.

There is money attached to the gamble. DeGrom is scheduled to make $37 million next season, while the final year of his deal is a club option.

That structure could appeal to New York if the alternative is handing Skubal the long-term contract expected for a pitcher entering the market in his prime.

The Mets have already seen one major rotation addition fall apart. Freddy Peralta went 5-9 with a 4.99 ERA before New York moved him to Tampa Bay ahead of the trade deadline.

A deGrom deal would carry another complication: he owns a full no-trade clause. Any return to Citi Field would need his approval before the Mets could make it happen.

Toronto also stands out as a possible landing spot. The Blue Jays are one game behind Cleveland in the Wild Card race and could pair deGrom with Dylan Cease at the top of their rotation.

For the Mets, the attraction is obvious. DeGrom would offer star-level upside without the same long-term commitment attached to Skubal, but New York would be betting heavily on an aging arm staying productive.
