The Toronto Blue Jays officially assigned 11 members of this year's draft class to Dunedin, giving fans their first real look at where this group begins its professional journey.
The group is heavy on pitching, led by third-round shortstop Ryan Cooney, the player scouting director Marc Tramuta compared directly to Ernie Clement.
Reese Bassinger, an undrafted signing out of West Virginia, joins fifth-rounder Nolan Higgins from Michigan State, the reliever whose strikeout rate jumped from 13.1 percent to 30.1 percent in his final college season.
Isaac Williams, another undrafted arm out of Oklahoma, and 17th-round pick Landon Waters from Mississippi round out more of the pitching depth in this assignment.
Gavin Seebold and Dax Dathe, both undrafted signings out of Indiana and LSU respectively, add even more arms to a pitching pipeline that's grown busy from nearly every direction this summer.
On the position player side, Ryan Franden joins as an undrafted infielder from Sam Houston, while 11th-round pick Brayden Martin arrives after hitting .352 with a .488 on-base percentage in his final season at Maryland.
Seventh-round outfielder Dean West, UCLA's leadoff hitter who posted a .418 on-base percentage this year, and eighth-round catcher Jake Bennett out of Dallas Baptist complete the group.
Why this assignment says plenty about Toronto's draft priorities
Sending this many names to the same level at once gives the organization a real chance to track this class together as it begins pro ball.
The mix leans heavily on the contact-first, high on-base approach this front office has clearly prioritized all draft, a pattern that runs from Cooney all the way down through late-round names like Martin and West.
It's a bit like watching an entire graduating class start their first day at the same new school together, unsure yet who rises to the top of the group.
Does sending this many names to Dunedin at once actually accelerate development, or does it simply reflect standard timing for a draft class this size entering the system together?
For now, all 11 players begin their professional careers in the same place, giving Blue Jays fans a real group to follow as this farm system continues building out from this year's class.
Whichever names climb fastest will start separating from the pack soon enough, but for now, they're all starting from the exact same spot.
Which of these Blue Jays draft picks are you most excited to follow at Dunedin?
