Toronto Blue Jays signed international free agent shortstop Sebastian Casanova, a low key minor league move with real farm system upside.

The Blue Jays transaction log shows the club signed Casanova to a minor league contract on Thursday. MLB's own Blue Jays transactions page mirrors the same entry, down to the position and date.
Casanova is listed as Sebastian Andres Casanova, a 16-year-old from Maracaibo, Venezuela. He's a right-handed hitter and thrower, and he's currently listed at 5 foot 9 and 167 pounds.
There are no pro stats to dig into yet, which is exactly the point of this part of January. You're buying feel, hands, and growth, then trusting your development people to shape the rest.
The Blue Jays had a busy day Thursday during the first official day of the international signing period as they also landed catcher Juan Caricote.

As a Jays fan, I love this kind of bet because middle infield depth always disappears faster than you think.
The transaction itself is clean, it's a minor league deal that starts the clock on coaching, reps, and real competition. If you want the receipt, it's sitting right on the January log page.
The big picture is roster math, not romance. Toronto just won 94 games last season, and a contender needs young, cheap talent arriving in waves to keep the core expensive and intact.
They also scored 798 runs, which tells you the big-league lineup did plenty of damage. Keeping that window open means the next wave has to come from somewhere, and international shortstops are a sensible place to shop.
My take is simple, this won't move headlines today, but it can move a system tomorrow. The next step is seeing how Casanova does in his first season of pro baseball.
The Blue Jays have done a great job over the years with their international signings and Casanova could be their next big star if he continues to develop the right way.
