The Toronto Blue Jays are looking for an ace pitcher this offseason, and the Detroit Tigers are struggling to re-sign Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal but unfortunately for the Blue Jays, they would have to give up too much to trade for him.

Acquiring Skubal would ultimately mean giving up Trey Yesavage and some draft picks, and that frankly wouldn't be a smart move for the Blue Jays.

Tarik Skubal is the piece the Blue Jays need but can't afford.

Ryley Delaney of Blue Jays Nation reported on the difficulties the Tigers are having trying to extend Skubal long term, stating they are miles apart in the negotiations, which also means he will be extremely expensive to trade away this off-season.
"It was reported in mid-October by Jon Heyman of The New York Post that there's a $250 million gap between what Skubal wants and what the Tigers want to give him. It's speculated that Skubal will test free agency when he becomes a free agent after the 2026 season. Acquiring Skubal would give any team a new ace. However, since the Tigers need an «overwhelming» offer, it seems unlikely that any team would make a move this off-season. For the Toronto Blue Jays, it would mean giving up Trey Yesavage and a metric ton more."-Delaney

While having Skubal this year would be amazing for the Blue Jays, most teams would be hesitant to trade for him, when he could just leave the following year.
Meaning the Blue Jays should hold out until next free agency to offer him a contract, although he would make the team significantly better right now.
"Last season with the Tigers, the left-handed pitcher had a 2.21 ERA and 2.45 FIP in 195.1 innings pitched, posting a 32.2 K% and 4.4 BB%. His numbers improved from the 2024 season, as he had a 2.39 ERA and 2.49 FIP in 192 innings pitched in 2024."-Delaney

Another pitcher in a similar situation is Freddy Peralta of the Milwaukee Brewers, and also similarly will likely not be dealt this off-season for the same reasons. The Blue Jays have some glaring gaps on the mound, and if they want another chance at the World Series it needs to be their number one priority.
