The Blue Jays have released pitching prospect Josbel Garcia, who is now a free agent. He's the latest young player to exit the organization this week.

The move follows the releases of pitcher Tanner Andrews and shortstop prospect Raimundo de los Santos. Rudy Martin Jr. also elected free agency after being outrighted.

Minor league free agency opened Monday. Organizations across baseball are trimming their systems to make room for new additions.

Garcia shouldn't be confused with veteran reliever Yimi Garcia, who also hit free agency after missing the entire 2026 season.

The details behind the decision weren't made public. Whether it came down to performance, health or roster fit remains unclear.

Why cut young arms when pitching depth was such a problem? Because the Jays are rebuilding that depth with a different blueprint.

Director of pitching Justin Lehr's program has focused on strike-throwing and count leverage. Toronto appears to be prioritizing arms that fit that approach.

The club has also been adding. Right-handers Nurberto German and Windel Encarnacion, along with Taiwanese pitcher Cai-Chen Long, have joined the system this fall.

The upper levels are led by Nolan Perry, the organization's No. 2 prospect. Javen Coleman and Daniel Guerra are knocking on the door, too.

Turnover in the low minors is normal, but this week's cuts are aggressive. Toronto had better be confident the incoming arms are better than the ones it's letting go.

It's like a coach cutting players before the new recruits have played a game. The plan looks good on paper, but nobody's proven anything yet.

The Jays learned in 2026 how quickly pitching depth evaporates. They used 16 starters, and several debuts came from deep in the system.

For the young pitcher, free agency offers a clean slate. A new organization might see something different and give him a clearer path.

For Ross Atkins' staff, the bigger decisions arrive Nov. 17, when Rule 5 protection is due. Those calls will say far more about the pitching pipeline than this one.
