Toronto Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins spoke to the media yesterday and touched on possibly removing Jeff Hoffman as the team's closer moving forward.
Atkins and Mark Shapiro held a press conference yesterday as they touched on multiple subjects including Jose Berrios' future with the team.
Ross Atkins speaks on Jeff Hoffman's role for next season
During the press conference, Atkins was asked about Hoffman's role for next season in which he gave a very interesting response.
According to Atkins, Hoffman is not stuck on being the closer and would be open to moving out of the role as his main concern is making the team better.
Ross Atkins, when asked if Jeff Hoffman would be the #BlueJays' closer next season:
«The great thing about Jeff is he's not married to that I think he would be open to anything that makes us better.»
«The great thing about Jeff is he's not married to that I think he would be open to anything that makes us better.»
This is an interesting statement from Atkins but does make sense since the Blue Jays did use Hoffman in the 7th and 8th inning on numerous occasions throughout the playoffs.
One fan pointed out how this could mean that the Blue Jays will now go after another high end reliever such as Devin Williams which would certainly improved the team's bullpen.
Devin Williams welcome to Toronto
While Hoffman did have a regular season filled with up and downs, he was very reliable for the Blue Jays in the playoffs as he finished with a 1.46 ERA in 12.1 innings pitched and 18 strikeouts.
If the Blue Jays do end up keeping Hoffman as their closer moving forward, they are certainly in good hands.
