Bo Bichette's future with the Toronto Blue Jays does not look good after latest report
The Blue Jays agreed to a monumental 14-year, $500 million contract with Vladimir Guerrero Jr., including a staggering $325 million signing bonus. The deal cements Guerrero as the franchise cornerstone for the next decade and beyond.
However, the financial commitment could come at a cost, potentially forcing the team to part ways with another promising young talent in the near future.
The Blue Jays are expected to cut ties with star shortstop Bo Bichette after Guerrero signing.
Peter Chawaga from The Sporting News writes that with the Blue Jays sitting below .500 and in third place in the highly competitive American League East, there's growing concern they could miss the playoffs for a second consecutive season, a scenario that, according to Zach Pressnell of FanSided, might force the team into sell mode before the trade deadline.
"At this point in his career, Bichette seems to have the mix of potential and struggles that make him a tantalizing change-of-scenery candidate. And as a shortstop, he would offer some unique defensive skills for a contending team." -Chawaga
With free agency looming at the end of the season, the Blue Jays may look to trade
Bo Bichette and recoup value before he hits the open market. After committing to Guerrero, the club could be approaching its payroll ceiling, potentially leaving little financial flexibility to retain Bichette long-term.
"He's earned All-Star nods in two of his seven big-league seasons so far, but saw a sharp dip at the plate in the 2024 campaign. So far in 2025, he's slashing .293/.326/.368, making good contact but without a homer yet." -Chawaga
We'll have to wait and see where the Blue Jays stand in the months to come.
