Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Bowden Francis is still recovering from his injury from last season but it looks like he will not start off the year in the majors.

Heading into the playoffs was the last time Francis spoke of his injury in which he stated that his recovery was taking a lot longer than expected but he was starting to feel much better.

Bowden Francis injury update and availability moving forward

Francis finished the 2024 season as one of the best pitchers in baseball which is how he landed a spot on the Blue Jays starting rotation in 2025 but was unfortunately unable to repeat the performance.
In 2025, Francis finished with a 6.05 ERA in 14 games with a 2-8 record in 64 innings pitched and 54 strikeouts.
"Because of the strong end to his 2024 season, Francis was given an opportunity as the Blue Jays' fifth starter, but it didn't go so well. In 14 starts, Francis authored a 6.05 ERA and 6.85 FIP in 64 innings pitched, with an 18.8 K% and 9.4 BB%, giving up 19 home runs for a 2.67 HR/9. Francis went on the injured list in June and didn't pitch again in 2025." -Ryan Delaney

Despite missing a good portion of the 2025 season, Francis is expected to make a full recovery in time for Spring Training.
Many expect Francis to start the season in 2026 with the Buffalo Bisons since he still has options left but he could still work his way back to the majors if he gets off to a hot start in the minors.
"He'll no doubt get a look in the Bisons' rotation to begin the season, but there's a chance he could also make his big league debut in 2026. If he pitches well, he could force the Blue Jays' hand to find a way to get him into the rotation, or maybe pitch out of the bullpen in a bulk-role at some point next season." -Delaney

This is quite the drop off from the start of last season for Francis but unfortunately, the Blue Jays have added to many solid pitchers to even debate if he can fight for a spot in the rotation to start the year.
