Chad Dallas gave John Schneider more than innings Thursday, turning his Blue Jays debut into something far bigger than a routine call-up.
Dallas said learning on Lou Gehrig Day that he was headed to the majors about a year after his father, Tony, died from ALS felt «extremely special» and «like a little God wink.»
That is what made the moment hit so hard. Lou Gehrig Day is MLB's June 2 league-wide observance to honor those lost to ALS, support families and raise money for research.
The baseball part held up, too. Dallas entered behind opener Mason Fluharty with a runner on third and 1 out in the second inning and worked his way straight through the jam.
He finished with 3 2/3 innings, allowing 1 run on 2 hits with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts as Toronto beat Atlanta 7-2 and avoided a sweep.
For Schneider, that was more than emergency coverage. Dallas was making his first big-league appearance after missing the entire 2025 minor league season following Tommy John surgery in September 2024.
Before the call, Dallas had posted a 4.50 ERA with 38 strikeouts in 36.0 innings over 10 Triple-A outings for Buffalo. That line did not scream headline, but it kept him close enough for this opening.

Lou Gehrig Day made Chad Dallas' call different
The timing is the part he will carry. Dallas said he had dreamed about reaching the majors since he was 3 or 4, and this call brought out «tons of emotions.»
He also did not take the mound alone in spirit. Dallas said family and friends came in from Orange, Texas, and Knoxville, where he pitched at Tennessee.
Then came the inning that settled everything. Schneider said escaping that early spot helped Dallas calm down, and the manager pointed to his breaking ball and poise from there.
Dallas even added a flash play to the night, fielding a comebacker behind his back and flipping to first for the out. It looked like a pitcher whose moment never sped up on him.
Toronto needed that kind of lift badly. The Blue Jays were staring at a fifth straight loss before Dallas helped change the tone against a Braves club sending Chris Sale to the mound.
That is why Dallas' words landed after the game. This was not only about a debut win. It was a son getting his call on a day tied deeply to ALS and turning it into a night his family will never forget.
Did Chad Dallas earn a longer look with Toronto after this debut?
