The Chicago White Sox have announced that they have agreed to a two year deal with one of the Toronto Blue Jays top free agent targets, Munetaka Murakami.
There were rumors that the Blue Jays were strongly looking to sign Murakami due to his offensive abilities but they somehow fell short to the White Sox.
White Sox sign Munetaka Murakami to a two year deal
MLB insider Jeff Passan broke the news this morning that the White Sox have agreed to a two year deal worth $34 million with Murakami which will pay him an average salary of $17 million per year.
News: Japanese slugger Munetaka Murakami is joining the Chicago White Sox on a two-year, $34 million contract. His physical has been passed. The deal is done. And the White Sox add a bat with superstar ceiling -- and flaws. All the details free at ESPN:
This deal has come as a bit of a surprise since the White Sox are not exactly known as a top destination for big time free agents but it looks like Murakami wanted to make sure he was a starter in his first season in the MLB which was the reason for his decision.
Well, at least Murakami won't have to worry about a lack of playing time in Chicago...
The only downside with this move is that Murakami was a high strikeout rate but his power makes up for that and that is certainly something he can work on over the next couple of seasons in Chicago before hitting the free agent market once again.
Great get by White Sox. His high K rate hurt his market but he will be back out at 27 with his otherworldly power
This is a tough one for the Blue Jays who could have benefitted from adding Murakami but there has been no details on if they even made him an official offer.
