Former Blue Jays pitcher Genesis Cabrera signs with the Pirates
The Pirates announced that they have signed Cabrera to a one year major league deal while also optioning Michael Darrell-Hicks and have DFA'd Hunter Stratton to make room for Cabrera on the 40 man roster.
We have signed LHP Génesis Cabrera to a one-year Major League contract.
RHP Michael Darrell-Hicks has been optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis to make room on the 26-man active roster.
Additionally, RHP Hunter Stratton has been designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.
This moves comes as a bit of surprise but not because the Pirates signed Cabrera but because it was to a major league deal, especially with the numbers Cabrera has put up this season.
This is now the third team that Cabrera is on this season as he started the year off with the New York Mets before being DFA'd then signed with the Chicago Cubs and ended up having the same fate.
Between Chicago and New York, Cabrera has a 6.35 ERA this season in 17 innings pitched with a 1.35 WHIP while striking out 15 batters which is pretty far from solid numbers.
It will be interesting to see if he ends up sticking around in Pittsburgh or if it will be just another pit stop along the road.
