The Cubs signed Turnbull to a minor league deal back in late July, but had yet to call him up as he was playing in Triple-A with the Iowa Cubs.
News broke late last night that Turnbull decided to opt out of his contract , resulting in the Cubs releasing him as he is now headed back for free agency.
RELEASED: #Cubs have released RHP Spencer Turnbull after he triggered an opt-out clause in his minor league contract.
RHP Spencer Turnbull, who made six starts with the @IowaCubs, is now a free agent. I'm told he's opted out.
Turnbull pitched 24.2 innings for the Iowa Cubs and put up a rough 9.49 ERA with an 0-3 record and struck out 24 batters in that time.
Now that he is back on the market, Turnbull will be hitting free agency once again, looking for his third contract of the season after being released by both the Blue Jays and the Cubs.
At 32 years old with no real MLB experience since 2023 before his Tommy John surgery it certainly will not be easy for Turnbull to land a new contract before the end of the season.
With how poorly this season has gone for Turnbull he might end up having to call it a career as he might not end up getting any contract offers even in the off-season.
