Cody Ponce gave John Schneider a worse update than the Blue Jays wanted after Monday's cart exit: an MRI is next for his right knee.
Schneider said Ponce told him he felt the knee hyperextend before he was taken off the field. That shifted the story from a scary scene to a real injury question.
That matters because the play itself already looked bad. Ponce charged a soft bouncer in the third inning against Colorado, pulled up awkwardly, then dropped to the dirt near the first-base side.
He did get to his feet with help, but the cart was the lasting image. Toronto later announced only right knee discomfort, which left the MRI as the first step toward finding out how much time he could miss.
For the Blue Jays, this isn't just about one ugly moment in a 14-5 loss. Ponce had opened the season in the rotation and was making his first big league appearance since 2021.
The video shows how fast it turned. Ponce breaks toward the ball, tries to slow his body, then his right leg gives way and the whole play stops cold.
Why the Cody Ponce update hits Toronto hard
The Blue Jays signed Ponce to be more than depth. He came back from four seasons overseas with a real shot to steady this staff, and Schneider had already made clear that Toronto viewed him as a starter.
That put real weight on Monday night. Even before the injury, Toronto was counting on Ponce to cover innings while other arms worked back and the club tried to settle its early rotation mix.
Now everything hangs on the scan. Hyperextension can mean a short absence or something that tears up a pitching plan for weeks, and the Blue Jays do not have the luxury of brushing this off.
Ponce's outing ended after 1.1 innings, which forced Toronto into a long night from the bullpen. By the time the game was over, the injury had become the bigger story than the scoreboard.
That's why Schneider's update landed with so much weight. MRI news always tells you the club is worried enough to stop guessing and start checking for damage.
Until those results come back, the Blue Jays are left staring at a brutal possibility. Cody Ponce's first start for Toronto may have lasted only 1.1 innings, and his next one suddenly feels far away.
