John Schneider facing backlash over bullpen decision
Hoffman's ERA is not the only problem as he is tied for the MLB lead for most blown saves this season with 7, losses with 6 and homeruns allowed with 14.
"Yep, another bullpen issue to worry about. Manager John Schneider has stuck with the aforementioned Jeff Hoffman -- now a Blue Jay -- as his closer all season even though Hoffman has a 4.77 ERA, 7 blown saves and 6 losses and is tied for the major league lead in home runs allowed by a reliever at 14. Fans are not confident in Schneider's bullpen decisions since he has proven in the past to make some big mistakes like he did during the 2022 Wild Card series against the Mariners.
"It doesn't help the confidence of Blue Jays fans that Schneider has made some questionable bullpen moves in previous postseasons -- against Seattle in the 2022 wild-card series and that odd very quick hook with Jose Berrios in 2023." -Schoenfield
The right decision would be to try out a new closer before the end of the season so that the Blue Jays could head into the playoffs with some confidence in whoever is closing out their games for them.
Hoffman might still be the best option for the Blue Jays but the only way to know for certain is to test out a couple other options before the end of the season to know for sure.
These are not easy decisions for Schneider to make but it is also part of his job to make tough decisions.
