It's fair to say that no one made a more memorable debut in the big league than Davis Schneider in 2023
The Blue Jays' second baseman/outfielder became the first player in MLB history to tally nine hits and two home runs in his first three MLB games, making an immediate impact during a standout performance at Fenway Park in Boston.
Schneider is getting hot at the right time.
Tyson Shushkewich from Blue Jays Nation writes that in the past month, Schneider has played in 14 games, logging 35 at-bats and picking up nine hits while posting a .257/.395/.400 slash line. More notably, he's rediscovered his power stroke, something he showcased recently against a formidable Yankees pitching staff.
"This started back on June 30th, with Schneider going 2 for 3 on the day against Carlos Rodon and the Yankees' relief staff.
He started the sixth inning rally that got Rodon removed from the game, attacking an outside fastball for a double down the left field line and later scoring when the Yankees infield booted the ball around." -Shushkewich
During the Canada Day game, Schneider went 1-for-3 at the plate, hitting a single in the bottom of the fourth inning off Max Fried that kept the inning alive. He later scored a run after Andres Gimenez launched a three-run homer over the outfield fence.
"The 3 for 6 stretch was impressive against the AL East rival, but last night's contest was the icing on the cake. Schneider went 2 for 4 at the plate, and both of his hits came in the form of a home run.
He launched a solo shot over the centre field wall, attacking a first pitch sweeper from Will Warren that left the bat at 103.1 MPH." -Shushkewich
Schneider's ability to play multiple positions certainly boosts his value on the roster, but in the end, it's his bat that will determine how much playing time he earns.
Hitting two home runs and coming through with clutch hits agaisnt the Yankees has strengthened his case, but now it's up to him to maintain that momentum and find the consistency needed to support his power game.
