Toronto Blue Jays fans saw Steve Cohen hint at smoke and are now trembling in fear that it has to do with free agent Kyle Tucker.

New York Mets owner Steve Cohen dropped a short, cryptic line on social media, and baseball internet did the rest. When an owner posts like a fan, it always lands differently.
Let me know when you see smoke
The timing is what's setting Toronto off. Reports this week have tied the Mets and Blue Jays to Tucker, with New York allegedly pushing a shorter deal at a massive annual number.
If Tucker really is choosing between «more years» and «more dollars per year,» a Cohen wink feels like gasoline. The New York Post has framed it as the Mets offering a fourth year, and that kind of push usually means the finish line is close.
On the field, Tucker is exactly why this panic makes sense. In 2025 with Chicago, he hit .266/.377/.464 with 22 homers, 25 steals, 73 RBIs, and 91 runs in 136 games.

Steve Cohen and Kyle Tucker smoke signals

I get why Jays fans are jumpy here, because Toronto has been burned by «finalist» winters before, and Cohen loves to twist the knife.
The Blue Jays were also among the final teams in on Juan Soto last off-season and ended up losing out to the Mets record setting deal.
For the Blue Jays, Tucker is a clean lineup fit, left-handed thump with patience, plus real baserunning value. He turns 29 on Saturday, so this is still prime-age production you can actually build around.
From the Mets side, Cohen going public, even vaguely, tracks with how this front office operates when it wants a star. The same reporting cycle has them swinging with top-of-market confidence again, and Toronto is the obvious competition.
So yes, there's smoke, but it does not guarantee fire for Queens or Toronto.
