The Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees both ended up missing out on free agent Juan Soto but since then Yankees GM Brian Cashman has been putting Ross Atkins to shame.
Yankees GM Brian Cashman has been putting Ross Atkins to shame lately
Both the Blue Jays and Yankees were there up until the end in the Juan Soto sweepstakes but both failed in signing him as they both finish with a $760 million contract while the New York Mets signed him for $765 million.
Must read on Blue Jays Insider
Since the Soto signing, Ross Atkins has failed to make any substantial moves while Yankees GM Brian Cashman has been using that $760 million to bring in all kinds of players signing Max Fried and Paul Goldscmidt while trading for Devin Williams, Cody Bellinger and Fernando Cruz.
They handed Max Fried the largest contract for a left-handed starter in big-league history.
They traded for all-star closer Devin Williams, former MVP Cody Bellinger and big-armed reliever Fernando Cruz.
They signed slugger Paul Goldschmidt and brought back reliever Jonathan Loáisiga. -Wilner
The Blue Jays have no been completely quiet since the
Soto signing as they traded for Andres Gimenez and Nick Sandlin while also signing pitcher Josh Walker and catcher Ali Sanchez but not of these moves are close to as big as some of the Yankees moves.
To be fair, the Jays also picked up Nick Sandlin in the trade, a reliever who could be their version of Loáisiga if things break right. They have also added journeyman lefty Josh Walker and third-string catcher Ali Sanchez, so they haven't done nothing. -Wilner
The part that is even tougher in all of this is that the Blue Jays could have benefited from acquiring some of the players the Yankees did such as Cody Bellinger and Devin Williams.
The Yankees' post-Soto activity, or even 50 per cent of it, would have been just what the doctor ordered for Jays looking for a reason to be interested in a team that followed three playoff appearances in four years with a last-place finish this past season. -Wilner
Hopefully Atkins starts making some big moves soon since if he continues to wait, there will be no more solid players left.
