The division is wide open for the Toronto Blue Jays, practically inviting them to turn it into a true race.

Despite Thursday's 9-5 loss, they still won the series against the Arizona Diamondbacks and now sit at 40-34, just three games behind the Yankees in the AL East.

Blue Jays ready to take over top spot in AL East.

Keegan Matheson from MLB.com writes that the Blue jays may not be a great team just yet, but the American League isn't exactly stacked with elite contenders right now either.
"Timing is everything, too. Besides, this is the Canadian market. The Maple Leafs stumbled out of the NHL playoffs a month ago and the Edmonton Oilers just lost in the Stanley Cup Finals to the Florida Panthers, so the entire attention of a country's sports fans finally rests on the Blue Jays.

This is their chance to grab one of baseball's biggest, broadest markets by the collar again, to excite people, to demand their attention." -Matheson

The Blue Jays haven't just improved their play, they've brought a more exciting, high-energy style to the field, packed with wild comeback victories. June and July are the kind of months that can either cause a team to stagnate or ignite a surge forward.
"If this is going to happen, the push through July and into the stretch run needs to be powered by the Blue Jays' stars.

Guerrero's season has mirrored the team's as a whole, good but not yet great. He alone holds the power to catapult the Blue Jays from the Wild Card to the AL East conversation, though.

Guerrero can single-handedly steal some games along the way, which is how 89 wins become 90, how 91 become 92. As we learned back in 2021, that painful shortcoming on the final day of the season, every single win matters." -Matheson

The silver lining? Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is heating up.
He ripped an RBI double on Thursday, crushed a home run as part of a three-hit performance on Tuesday, and reached base five times during Wednesday's victory.
"Motivation is a contagious thing. A major four-game series against the Yankees is coming June 30, and from there, every conversation we have will be tied to the Trade Deadline." -Matheson

Momentum is there for the taking, and the Blue Jays have a chance to seize it, but the aim isn't just to sneak into the playoffs. The real target is the AL East crown.
