Ricky Tiedemann is back on a mound, and Sunday's outing was exactly the kind of positive step his long recovery needed.
The Toronto Blue Jays prospect struck out two over a scoreless inning on just 18 pitches.
His fastball averaged 96.4 mph and topped out at 97.7, real encouraging velocity numbers for a pitcher this deep into a complicated rehab process.
Sunday marked Tiedemann's first live game action since his rehab was paused earlier this month.
That pause came back on July 2 due to a neck injury, and Tiedemann received injections to address symptoms he felt before some of his earlier rehab starts.
Toronto's No. 10 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, has now appeared in two games this year for the Florida Coast League Blue Jays, tossing two innings with four strikeouts, two hits allowed and one earned run.
That's a small sample, but a genuinely encouraging one given everything Tiedemann has had to work through just to get back on a mound at all.
Why this comeback has been such a long road
Tiedemann missed all of last season and half of 2024 after Tommy John surgery that July, the kind of layoff that tests both a pitcher's body and his patience in equal measure.
The gap between his last minor league appearance in 2024 and his first outing of 2026 stretched an almost unbelievable 706 days.
That's nearly two full years without live competition, a stretch that would challenge command and conditioning for any pitcher, let alone one working back from a major surgery followed by a separate neck issue.
It's a bit like an athlete returning to competition after a long layoff, uncertain how much rust has built up until the moment actually arrives.
Does this scoreless outing signal Tiedemann's return is finally gaining real momentum, or is it still too early to expect a smooth path the rest of the way given how many setbacks he's already faced?
For an organization that's leaned heavily on pitching development this season, getting a talent like Tiedemann back on track matters well beyond just one clean inning.
His next outing will say a lot more about whether Sunday was the start of real, sustained progress.
Are you optimistic about Ricky Tiedemann's long road back after this scoreless outing?
