The Tigers steal away Jack Flaherty from the Blue Jays and sign him to a two year deal
The Detroit Tigers announced late last night that they have signed free agent pitcher Jack Flaherty to a two year deal worth $35 million which will pay him an average salary of $17.5 million per season.
Right-handed pitcher Jack Flaherty, one of the youngest starting pitchers and top arms left in free agency, has reportedly agreed to a two-year, $35 million deal with the Detroit Tigers. The news came late last evening. -Stack
The details in the contract were released as well stating that Flaherty will be paid $25 million the first season and will have an opt out in the second year but if he makes at least 15 starts in 2026, his salary will go from $10 to $20 million.
The contract, which includes an opt-out after 2025, will pay him $25 million this upcoming season. Additionally, if he makes at least 15 starts this season, his 2026 salary can go from $10 million to $20 million (given he does not opt-out after the first year). -Stack
Flaherty would have been a great option for the Blue Jays starting rotation as he was one of the best free agent pitcher available this off-season as he finished the 2024 season with a 3.17 ERA.
It will be interesting to see if the Blue Jays have any interest in going back after another starting pitcher this off-season or if they are satisfied which their most recent addition of Max Scherzer.
