The Toronto Blue Jays acquire right handed pitcher from the Boston Red Sox

The Rule 5 Draft is currently taking place in Dallas at the Winter Meetings for all players that have that are not currently on 40 man roster but have been with their team for more than 5 season since the age of 18 or younger.

The Blue Jays just announced that they have selected right handed pitcher Angel Bastardo from the Boston Red Sox in the Rule 5 Draft who was most recently playing for the Red Sox double-A affiliate team.

The pick will cost the Blue Jays $100,000 and they will need to keep him on their 40 man roster for the entire season and if they decide to remove him from the roster, they will need to offer him back to the Red Sox for $50,000 before making any moves.

This is an interesting choice by the Blue Jays as Bastardo is still recovering from Tommy John surgery and will miss a good chunk of the 2025 season due to his recovery.

Bastardo does seem to have some potential despite putting up some rough numbers last season with a 5.36 ERA and an 0-5 record in 45.1 innings pitched but he is only 22 years old which leaves him time to improve.
