The Tigers announced late last night that they signed Jack Flaherty to a two year $35 million contract which will pay him $25 million in the first season and if he does not opt out after year one could make up to $20 million the second year if he makes at least 15 starts.
The Blue Jays move closer to signing free agent Alex Bregman after the Tigers most recent signing
The Blue Jays have been interested in Bregman for quite some time now and it was said that their main competition has been the Tigers but they might now be out of the running's for Bregman.
According to reports, their signing of pitcher Jack Flaherty last night might have taken them out as they spent a decent amount of Flaherty which is great news for the Blue Jays.
Why is that good for Toronto? Because it could possibly take the Tigers out of the running for superstar third baseman Alex Bregman, narrowing the Jays competition on that front. -Farkas
The Blue Jays have been connected to Bregman from the start of the offseason, and they now have the cleanest opening for him. -Farkas
The Blue Jays top competition for Bregman is now the Boston Red Sox who do not have room at third base and would have to move Bregman to second base.
The other team showing interest is Bregman's former team, the Astros but the good news on that front is that they are apparently not willing to offer him his asking price which the Blue Jays are willing to approach.
Toronto has a clear availability at third base, whereas the Boston Red Sox would need to play Bregman at second. The incumbent Houston Astros are still in play, but they aren't willing to pay Bregman's asking price either - and they'd have to move both Isaac Paredes and Jose Altuve to different positions to accommodate him. -Farkas
While a deal is far from done, the Blue Jays seem to be the top landing spot from Bregman as of right now.
