MLB writer Joel Reuter writes about Chris Bassitt being an intriguing trade chip if the Blue Jays begin to struggle and decide to sell come the trade deadline in July.
Nick Ziegler from the Toronto Blue Jays On Si writes that though it's still early in the season and there's plenty of time to bounce back, the AL East is shaping up to be especially competitive this year. The Blue Jays will need to take a hard, realistic look at their postseason chances as the season unfolds.
"If the Blue Jays do fall out of contention, they will have some appealing pieces to trade away if they choose to do so." -Ziegler
The talented right-hander has kicked off the season in outstanding form, posting a 2-1 record with a 1.88 ERA. While it's still early, he's made a strong case as one of the best pitchers in baseball so far this year.
"At 36 years old, Bassitt likely won't fit into any long-term plans for Toronto beyond this season, so if they continue to struggle, moving him at the deadline makes sense." -Ziegler
If it comes to that, Bassitt could command a strong return at the trade deadline. With Vladimir Guerrero Jr. now locked in on a long-term deal, the Blue Jays need to be strategic in building a competitive roster around their franchise cornerstone, and moving Bassitt at peak value could be a key step in that process.
The Blue Jays will try and get back into the win column as they kick-off a three game series against the New York Yankees on Friday.
