The Toronto Blue Jays have been the busiest team during free agency, while they are still involved in Kyle Tucker and Bo Bichette they need a replacement for Jeff Hoffman, with only two realistic options left in Pete Fairbanks and Evan Phillips, it appears that Phillips is the more likely pick.
The Blue Jays were heavily interested in Edwin Diaz and Robert Suarez, but they signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves respectively.
Blue Jays look to Evan Phillips to replace Jeff Hoffman
Caleb Kerney of the Heavy reported on the Blue Jays continuous search for a Hoffman replacement.
Hoffman is a capable reliever but it seems like the team want to move him out of his closer role and more into the set up man position.
"In 2025, Phillips recorded two holds, one save, and six strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. During the 2024 season, he had nine holds, 18 saves, and 63 strikeouts while posting a 3.62 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP."-Caleb Kerney
For the Blue Jays to really put a stamp on their offseason they need to get a late game reliever, they loaded up their starting rotation, they improved their bullpen, but still lacking the closer, and they're going to get at least either Bichette, Tucker, or Bregman. Meaning they will be one of the most complete teams in the MLB.
"In 2025, Phillips began the season on the IL because of a rotator cuff strain. Then he underwent Tommy John surgery in June. Other than those two ailments, he's been relatively healthy."-Caleb Kerney
The Toronto Blue Jays have an opportunity to repeat last season, and potentially be even better. With the AL East gearing up to be the best division in recent memory, the Blue Jays are going to need all the help they can get.
