Louis Varland, Kazuma Okamoto, and Dylan Cease have all been nominated for All-MLB Team honors.

That's a genuinely notable recognition for three players who represented real individual bright spots during an otherwise disappointing Blue Jays season.

Cease's nomination is the least surprising of the three, given his standing as one of the premier starting pitchers in the American League this year. His season included a dominant complete-game shutout and a strikeout pace that ranked among the league's best.

Okamoto's inclusion caps off a historic rookie season. He broke Toronto's franchise rookie home run record and set the mark for homers by a Japanese right-handed hitter, finishing the year as the team's clear offensive centerpiece.

Varland's nomination reflects his emergence as one of the better relievers in baseball, a genuine breakout that helped stabilize a bullpen that carried one of the heaviest workloads in the league all season.

Why this recognition matters for a disappointing year

Individual accolades like these rarely soften the sting of missing the playoffs, especially a year after reaching the World Series.

But having three players recognized at this level says something real about the talent that remained on this roster even through a season defined mostly by collective underperformance.

For Okamoto specifically, this nomination adds to what's already been a breakout campaign that helped validate Toronto's offseason investment in him as a free agent signing.

Cease and Varland's recognition reinforces that Toronto's pitching staff, despite all the injuries that hit the rotation throughout the year, still produced genuine elite-level performers at both the rotation and bullpen level.

Whether any of the three ultimately make the final All-MLB Team is a separate question from simply earning the nomination itself, but all three have real cases worth watching as voting continues.

For a fan base still processing a disappointing finish, these nominations offer a reminder that real individual talent exists on this roster heading into an important offseason.
